The Art of Candle Care: Extending the Life of Your Candles

Candles have the remarkable ability to transform a space with their warm glow and enchanting scents. To fully enjoy their magic and ensure their longevity, proper candle care is essential. Whether you’re lighting a candle to create a soothing ambiance or infuse your home with fragrance, these tips will help you make the most of your candles:

1. Trim the Wick

Before lighting your candle, always trim the wick to about 5mm. This prevents excessive smoke and ensures a clean, even burn. Long wicks can cause the flame to grow too large, which can lead to uneven melting and a shorter candle life.

2. The First Burn Matters

When you light a new candle, allow it to burn until the entire surface becomes liquid. This prevents “tunnelling,” where the wax only melts in the centre, leaving unused wax along the edges. The first burn sets the stage for the candle’s subsequent burns.

3. Avoid Drafts

Candles exposed to drafts can result in uneven burning and dripping. Place candles away from open windows, fans, or air conditioning vents to ensure a steady burn and even pool of wax.

4. Let it Burn

Allow your candle to burn for at least one hour for every inch in diameter. This ensures a deep and even melt pool, preventing tunnelling and maximizing fragrance throw.

5. Extinguish Properly

Instead of blowing out the flame, use a candle snuffer to extinguish it. Blowing can lead to splattering wax and lingering smoke. Snuffing the flame also minimizes the risk of wax being blown onto surfaces.

6. Centre the Wick

After extinguishing the flame, ensure the wick is centred and upright. This prevents off-centre burns and uneven melting in future uses.

7. Keep the Wax Pool Clean

Before relighting your candle, remove any debris, wick trimmings, or matches from the wax pool. Keeping the pool clean prevents these materials from affecting the candle’s burn.

8. Store Properly

When not in use, store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Sunlight and heat can cause the wax to soften, warp, or fade.

9. Use a Candle Snuffer or Wick Dipper

Using a candle snuffer or one of our wick dippers not only prevents wax splatter but also helps preserve the wick length for the next use.

10. Trim the Wick Again

Before each subsequent use, trim the wick to about 5mm. This ensures a consistent and controlled flame.

By incorporating these simple yet effective practices into your candle routine, you’ll not only prolong the life of your candles but also enhance their performance. Proper candle care allows you to relish in the beauty of a well-burning candle, enjoy its captivating aroma, and create a cozy and inviting ambiance that transforms your space into a haven of comfort and serenity.
